MINING UNDERPERFORMING:

 

Mining productivity sees its biggest drop since December 2016, decreasing 5.5 percent in January 2018. Of the 18 minerals produced in Mexico, 11 reported losses.

IT’S IMPERATIVE TO REBOOT PROJECTS:

 

Aura Minerals to reactivate its projects in Mexico and Brazil. The Aranzazu Mine in Zacatecas is to resume operations for the first time since activity was suspended after the fall of metal prices in 2015. Also, the Sao Francisco gold mine in the Brazilian Mato Grosso, halted in 2016, will be reopened.

Agreement between the Mexican Mining Union and First Majestic provides a 14.5 percent wage increase for the company’s labor force.

 

WHAT THE INDUSTRY MUST TAKE CARE OF:

 

Africa’s dependency on extractive mining has its fortunes dictated by commodity prices. The African mining vision strives to extract more socioeconomic value from the industry, mainly from the removal of tariff barriers and the implementation of more trade agreements.

Citizens of La Paz, Baja California, say that mining is significantly jeopardizing the region’s watersheds. The community makes clear that they are not against mining as long as mine operations stay away from area aquifers.

Philippines calls for environmental human rights, and says that mining practices must abide by them. The government will start analyzing the ecological impact of mining before granting any concessions.
