There was good and bad news this week for mining as gold exports increased in 1H18 compared to 1H17 but silver exports floundered. But Mexico took first place in 2017 in terms of global zinc production, with national operators Industrias Peñoles, Grupo México and Fresnillo, and international Goldcorp contributing the lion’s share. In anticipation of the new President-elect entering office, miners seek to open communication with his office to promote a more favorable fiscal environment for the industry.

Miners seek dialogue with AMLO for revision of fiscal system. Between 2012 and 2017, exploration investment decreased to US$612 million from US$1.17 million, a fall of 47 percent.

Complaints against Goldcorp’s Peñasquito mine have decreased by 66 percent in 2018 due to community engagement programs.
